Next, with the advent of video recording in the 1960s, non-verbal cues become the focus of study. Quickly understood was the idea that coupling visual images with audio data provides even more information about the general context in which language is being produced. But the collection and transcription processes take considerable time and are highly labor intensive. Fifty hours of work may be needed for a single hour of video recording. While the diaries were primarily European projects corresponding to quite general issues, the longitudinal corpora were at first largely American projects corresponding to much more specific questions.
